After working for a few major ISP'S (Internet service providers). I have found that not many of UK customers understand what Broadband is and how it works. I hope through the support pages, forum & chat room's on the lanwanman website, that you will understand ADSL a little better .
Quite often you may phone a technical support line and feel frustrated and intimidated by jargon and technical (geeks speak). We have compiled a jargon buster page which can be referenced to explain jargon / acronyms. << Jargon Busta >>
ADSL(Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) - is used to provide broadband through a standard telephone line
The telephone line running into most UK houses is mad from a pair of twisted copper wires, until broadband came along the cabling was used for transmitting voice calls only.
The twisted copper cabling is capable of transmitting and receiving both voice and broadband signals at the same time this is why we need micro filters AKA Z-Blockers to separate/filter the two different signals. << More on microfilters >>
Voice calls (roughly) use a band of frequencies ranging anywhere from 0 up to 5 KHz. The voice part of the network is known as PSTN (public switched telephone network). << More on PSTN >>
ADSL uses a much broader band of the frequency that the twisted cables are capable of. Hence the name Broadband. ADSL Broadband uses a frequency range roughly any where between 20 KHz up to and around 1000KHz.
The twisted copper cabling is capable of transmitting and receiving both voice and broadband data frequencies at the same time this is why we need micro filters AKA Z-Blockers to separate/filter the two different frequencies. Allowing us to use both phone and Broadband at the same time without any interference. << More on microfilters >>
Broadband as detailed above allows us to make and receive voice calls at the same time as surfing the web, over and above this the speed difference is far superior to the old dial up connections. Previously we were only able to get connection speeds of up to 56K. This was painfully slow. Broadband provides super fast download speeds, meaning that web pages appear almost instantly. << More on Broadband Speed's >>
